Global Antimicrobial
Susceptibility Testing Market, By Product Type (Manual Antimicrobial
Susceptibility Testing Products {Susceptibility Testing Disks, Mic Strips, and
Susceptibility Plates}, Automated Laboratory Instruments, and Consumables), By
Application (Antibacterial, Antifungal, Anti-parasitic and Antiviral), By Method
(Disk Diffusion, Rapid Automated AST, Broth Dilution, Gradient Diffusion, and
Genotypic Methods), By End User (Hospitals, Pathology/Diagnostic Laboratories,
Research and Academic Institutes, Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Companies,
and Contract Research Organizations), and By Region (North America, Latin
America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Middle East, and Africa) was valued at US$ 2.6
billion in 2017, and is projected to exhibit a CAGR of 6.2% over the forecast
period (2018 - 2026).
Antimicrobial susceptibility
testing (AST) and Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) are important criteria to be
considered during the development of new antibiotics. AST aims to ensure that
suitable antibiotics are prescribed to individuals by monitoring inhibition
zone of antibiotics and emergence of resistant pathogens in infected
individuals. Antimicrobial susceptibility testing also helps to detect isolates
with defined resistance mechanisms for infection prevention and control.
Furthermore, AST is important in the assessment of resistance incidence and
prevalence in epidemiological studies, which examine the origin and spread of
resistance, including studies on the effectiveness of measures taken to
counteract spread. The government has been taking initiatives to address antimicrobial
resistance. For instance, every November since 2015, WHO has been conducting
the global, multi-year campaign with the theme ‘Antibiotics: Handle with care’,
to spread awareness regarding multi-resistance.

Manufacturers in the
antimicrobial susceptibility testing market are focused on developing rapid and
cost effective tests for detection of different microbe resistance. For
instance, in March 2016, Becton, Dickinson and Company launched the new BD
Phoenix M50 ID/AST system, which helps to deliver the same rapid, accurate, and
cost-effective testing as the legacy BD Phoenix 100, within a small footprint.
Furthermore, extensive research is being conducted by medical device
manufacturers to offer cost-effective AST instruments. For instance, in 2017, the
Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE) developed a
cost-effective smartphone-based antimicrobial susceptibility test reader for
drug resistance testing. It is a portable smartphone-based colorimetric 96-well
microtiter plate (MTP) reader, which is capable of automated AST without the need
for a trained diagnostician.

Key Takeaways of the
Antimicrobial Susceptibility Testing Market:
The global antimicrobial
susceptibility testing market is expected to expand at a CAGR of 6.2% during
the forecast period (2018–2026), owing to increasing applications of AST and
Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) surveillance in the development of new antibiotics
and emergence of multidrug resistance, globally.
Among product type, the automated
laboratory instruments segment is expected to grow at highest CAGR, as these
instruments offer rapid, accurate, and efficient susceptibility testing,
thereby enhancing workflow, reducing hands-on time, and enabling rapid
reporting.
Major players operating in the
global antimicrobial susceptibility testing market include bioMérieux S.A.,
HiMedia Laboratories, Alifax Holding S.p.A., Creative Diagnostics, Resistell
AG, Danaher Corporation, Becton, Dickinson and Company, Thermo Fisher
Scientific Inc., Merck KGaA, and Bio-Rad Laboratories, Inc.
